Realization of Domestic:N2O Emission Reduction Catalyst in Furnace

January 21st, the N2O reduction catalyst production research and application project independently developed by Sichuan Shutai Chemical Technology Co., Ltd. has passed the expert review organized by China Nitrogen Fertilizer Industry Association. The N2O reduction catalyst has a lower cost, and realizes localization of N2O reduction catalyst in furnace of nitric acid production. With the Implementation of national carbon reduction policy, the market prospect of this catalyst is expected to be good.

This catalyst uses new coprecipitation method and high-temper calcination (1000℃~1300℃) which makes the active components more evenly dispersed between zirconium and cerium solid melts. Besides, the catalyst has good thermal stability, low volume shrinkage and is not easy to pulverize. It can be operated at high temperature (above 850 ) for a long time, and its catalytic activity decreases slowly.

During the implementation process, Shutai developed a new model of seven-hole cylinder with diameter of 11mm. the N2O reduction catalyst made by that model has better mechanical strength and larger surface area that is good for gas diffusion and absorption ( desorption ). Also, it has a good effect on mass and heat transfer. The efficiency of catalyst will be improved by adding auxiliaries in the forming process of catalyst to increase its surface area and reactive center.

The professors made 3 suggestions on the catalyst: first, smaller catalyst diameter and further optimizing its process to improve the efficiency of emission reduction; second, optimizing process route to further reduce cost; third, strengthening product promotion and application.

It is known that the decomposition technology of N2O reduction catalyst in domestic is low-temper(400℃~500℃) decomposition out of furnace. It requires additional equipment and more energy consumption, which has great influence on normal production activities. The cost of N2O reduction catalyst developed by Shutai is moderated, and its performances are up to the same kind of products abroad, which realized the industrial production and filled the blank of domestic N2O catalyst in-furnace decomposition application technology. Besides, existing equipment can make products as normal with Shutai’s catalyst and does not need to modify. And emission reduction is more direct.

So far, only Johnson Matthey has realized industrialization of N2O direct decomposition catalyst in nitric acid production, and its price is very high. The N2O reduction catalyst developed by Shutai has been used in nitric acid plant of Sichuan Jinxiang Chemical Co., Ltd. And its effectiveness is very good.
